Scientific information on eye health properties of saffron, resveratrol

Saffron 2020 has been developed based on recent clinical research in Europe, which showed that taking oral supplementation of saffron (20 mg per day) for three months in patients with early stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD), also known as ARMD) induced a significant improvement of retinal function and visual acuity.

According to Professor Silvia Bisti who carried out the research in patients with age-related macular degeneration, “Patients’ vision improved after taking the saffron pill”. Mechanism-based studies showed that active compounds in saffron (crocin and crocetin) act at molecular level with mechanisms that protect and restore structure and functional of retinal cells. This can then stop or delay vision loss from macular degeneration.

Continuous, daily supplementation with saffron (20 mg/day) is needed in order to achieve the eye health benefits of saffron in AMD patients.

Two most-studied constituents of saffron have unique molecular properties that enable them to modify activity of specific genes in the retina of the eye that are involved in protection and repair of retinal cells. The beneficial effects of supplementation with saffron in early age-related macular degeneration are unique and have not been observed with other chemicals either natural or synthetic.

In our hands, we tested the active ingredient of saffron, carotenoid crocin, in a cell-based assay with retinal cells and have shown that it can protect photoreceptors from damage caused by intense light. We then tested crocin in combination with resveratrol, the natural antioxidant compound found in red wine.

The combination of crocin (from saffron) with resveratrol showed a novel synergistic effect in protecting retinal cells.

This is the first time this effect has been shown and we presented the results at the leading natural products research conference in United States in July 2012. This combination of saffron and resveratrol with other important eye health nutrients into the convenient capsules provides a unique opportunity and a natural supplement for individuals recently diagnosed with macular degeneration.
