Keeping A Healthy Level Of Macular Pigments Is Important

Lutein and zeaxanthin (also called macular pigments) are the two primary carotenoids found in the human eye (macula and retina). They work as biological filters inside our eyes protecting the macula from blue light (imagine sunscreen) and from the sun’s harmful rays. The macular pigment lutein works as a resident antioxidant and free radical scavenger to reduce oxidative stress-induced damage to the retina.  Derived from bright yellow marigold flowers, lutein is a carotenoid pigment with exceptional nutritional value for vision health. Lutein and zeaxanthin work synergistically in our bodies to protect the retina from daily oxidative damage.

Lutein is a carotenoid that helps reduce the risks of age-related eye problems such as cataracts and a disease that causes vision loss in the elderly (age-related macular degeneration or AMD). According to peer-reviewed scientific research, taking enough daily quantities of macular pigments like lutein and zeaxanthin may protect against the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

Lutein may be found in egg yolks and in corn, orange pepper, kiwi fruit, grapes, zucchini, and squash and in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale. Studies have shown that a diet with low levels of macular pigments lutein and zeaxanthin is associated with a higher risk of developing AMD. Additionally, many scientific studies demonstrated that nutritional supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin increase macular pigment levels in humans, with a high concentration of these compounds found in the retina.
