When it comes to eye health, many people tend to put it on the backburner until it’s too late.  Neglecting your eyesight early on can have serious consequences as you age, with Age-Related Macular Degeneration being one of the leading causes of vision loss in people ages 50 and older.  Whether it be corrective lenses or eye health supplements, there are many different ways to improve your eyesight and maintain eye health as you age. Here are a few simple measures you can take to improve your eyesight.  

Eat The Right Foods

You’ve probably heard the age-old adage that eating carrots are good for your eyes, but did you know that there are tons of other foods that can help improve your vision as well?  Foods rich in nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin have been proven to improve eyesight, as well as foods with vitamins C and E and Omega-3 fatty acids. Dark, leafy greens like kale and spinach are great examples of foods that should be included in your daily diet to protect your eyesight, as well as almonds, salmon, broccoli and oranges.  Including healthy, nutrient-dense foods in your everyday diet can do wonders for preserving and protecting your eyesight, so try including some of these foods in your next meal!

Use Low Vision Aids

Using a low vision aid, such as magnifiers and corrective lenses, is one of the most common ways to improve and protect eyesight.  Low vision aids work to enlarge images and make it easier to see objects both close up and far away. Corrective lenses are typically the most commonly used low vision aids, but many people choose to use magnifiers as well.  Low vision aids are typically prescribed by a doctor but can also be found in most drugstores. If purchasing a low vision aid at the drugstore, be sure to know exactly what you’re looking for, as choosing the wrong over-the-counter low vision aids can actually damage your eyesight and cause headaches.  It is best, however, to speak with your eye doctor before purchasing low vision aids, as they can recommend one that’s best for you.

Take Vitamins & Supplements

Taking vitamins and supplements are other common ways to maintain and improve eye health.  Supplements like Saffron 20/20 are commonly used to maintain eyesight, and many people have found success in taking these kinds of supplements.  Saffron is a common ingredient in many eye health supplements, as it contains many healing properties and has also been used to treat conditions like Age-Related Macular Degeneration.  In addition to eye supplements, your doctor may also recommend you take vitamins, especially if you are not getting enough of them through your diet alone.  Vitamins A, C, D, and E are all great vitamins to take to maintain eye health and improve eyesight, and are commonly used for this reason.  As with all of these tips, be sure to speak with your doctor before taking any new vitamins and supplements.
