What is the best font for reading if your eyes are affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

As you know there is no treatment for the most prevalent form of AMD, known as dry AMD. However there are things that can done and lifestyle choices to improve quality of life.

A recent study examined the reading performance of patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using 4 readily available fonts.

Patients were asked to read MNRead charts, which were printed in the following fonts: Times New Roman (serif, proportionally spaced), Arial (sans serif, proportionally spaced), Courier (serif, mono spaced), and Andale Mono (sans serif, mono spaced).

The results showed that reading acuity was significantly better on the Courier chart and significantly worse on the Arial chart than on any of the other charts.

The study showed that the font style has an effect on reading performance in patients affected by AMD. Study recommend Courier font for better readability.
