Frequently waking up weary, can be a sign of an underlying sleep pattern or health problem. The natural cognitive and sensory-motor deficits that occur soon after waking are referred to as sleep inertia. It happens when a person wakes up from a deep, or slow-wave sleep. After waking up, the brain stem, which governs basic processes, expands its function. The occasional occurrence of waking up fatigued is usually not a cause for alarm. It can take up to 30 minutes for the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in decision-making and self-control, to catch up.

One main cause of sleep deprivation is poor sleep hygiene. The following are some examples of poor sleep hygiene:

· Not having a consistent nighttime routine that includes consistent sleep and wake times

· Having a sleeping environment that is too hot, too light, or too loud, or having an uncomfortable mattress or pillow

· Taking daily naps that last more than 30 minutes

· Gazing at phone or computer screens within 2 hours of going to bed
